As the title suggests, the “500” signifies the amount of the days Tom spends with Summer: whether those days are happy days or sad ones. This movie used two important techniques in telling the story. First, the plot is told unconventionally. Second, in some scenes, the screen is split into two parts. Those things strengthen the power of the movie.
